That's a combined toilet and shower in one room, along with a small sink. The door to the bathroom area was a metal-framed frosted piece of plexiglass likened to a vintage shower door. The rooms are rather small, so if you can swing the cost of a suite (which is the category called “Deluxe” and “Deluxe Suite” on ADC) we recommend doing so for a small yet significant amount of extra square footage. Announcements and printed matter onboard are in German, but the crew is fluent in English. I was impressed at how comfortable the mattresses and comforters were. The boat had a very nice lounge area with large viewing windows, where everyone on the trip tended to congregate for good company when we were not out on the decks looking at wildlife and the surroundings. Off-ship activities include a mix of watersports (the ship is equipped with one zodiac, multiple kayaks and a couple of paddleboards) and hikes, but a greater emphasis is placed on cultural tours.

The lounge features the ship’s only bar — where local beers, wines and expertly mixed cocktails can be purchased — while the restaurant showcases a free, 24/7 coffee and water station. We set sail from Petersburg at lunchtime, and spent the remainder of the afternoon whale watching – and by golly did we see whales! During this time of year (September) the last humpback whales are still in Alaskan waterways, eating before they migrate south for winter. To wait for our tide timing, we spent the afternoon in a small wilderness bay.

The sound had been a chunk of ice sloughing off the side of the ancient glacier. We were on a small ship and granted a rare overnight pass into the national park, there were no other vessels around, so we were the only ones to witness it, all alone, bobbing along in a vast field of blue cotton candy-colored ice.
